Studying Pharmacy in France
In order to be able to practice the profession of pharmacy in France, you will need a “PhD Diploma in Pharmacy.” You can finish this degree between 6-9 years of studying pharmacy in France, depending on the option the student chooses. Pharmacy studies are divided into 3 courses:
First session:
The first course includes the first and second years. During this course students acquire basic scientific knowledge in biology, physics, mathematics, chemistry, physiology and public health.
Second period :
This course covers the third and fourth years of study. Training is also based on coordinated teaching, which includes several disciplines and self-learning. The courses taught in the third and fourth years constitute basic pharmacy training, allowing all students to gain the following:
- Basic knowledge specific to each discipline, based on knowledge gained in the first and second years. This also provides students with a strong scientific background, enabling them to become specialists in pharmacotherapy and clinical biology.
- Biomedical and therapeutic knowledge from multidisciplinary coordinated educational courses, preparing them for the comprehensive management of the patient within the various functions of the pharmacist.
Third session:
The third course includes the fifth and sixth years. During the fifth year, all students complete, during which they receive academic instruction and hospital training. A full academic year consists of 60 ECTS credits. During the fifth and sixth years, students must pass exams for 4 taught modules (2 modules 5th and 2 modules VI), 1 hospital course, and an occupational placement (pharmacy or industry).
The hospital internship consists of a 12-month part-time placement in the hospital. Students who take the industrial option must also successfully complete a 3-month internship during their fifth year. This placement should focus on a university hospital project in research or with industrial applications completed in an industrial site or at an accredited hospital, university or research laboratory facility. Some students complete 4 modules in the fifth year and are able to take the master’s course during the sixth year. 20% of students choose this path, particularly those interested in the industrial option.
Admission criteria to study pharmacy in France:
In France, high school concludes with a final exam, the baccalaureate. Passing the baccalaureate grants the student the right to enroll in any program at any French university. In other words, there is no choice after the baccalaureate for the first year of university education. Therefore, anyone who obtains a passing grade can register as an undergraduate student at the College of Pharmacy, regardless of the type of baccalaureate and its grades. The student is also entitled to repeat the year once without the approval of the college.
